Top Reasons Tourist Visa Applications Get Rejected – And How to Avoid Them

Getting a tourist visa approved is easier than most people think — as long as you avoid a few common mistakes. Here are the biggest reasons visas get rejected, and exactly how to fix them.

1. Weak Financial Proof

The first thing a visa officer usually sees is whether you can afford your vacation and if you will return home after the trip.

A strong financial proof helps.

You need to plan this several months in advance by maintaining a decent average balance in your savings bank account (SB) or salary account.

Fixed deposit or sweep-in sweep-out accounts are at a disadvantage – as the visa officer prefers to see an account which has regular transactions.

Tip: Open a bank account with IDFC First Bank or any other bank which gives high interest rate for SB accounts.

Common mistakes

  • Low or inconsistent bank balance.
  • Sudden large deposits (avoid depositing a single large amount just before getting your bank statement – this is a big red flag for the visa officer)
  • No proof of stable income.

How to avoid it

  • Maintain a stable balance for at least 3–6 months.
  • Add explanations for unusual transactions in your covering letter.
  • Attach complete financial documents – not just a bank statement (insist on sending the documents even if the officer of VFS says it is not required). Even a credit card statement with a good credit limit helps.

2. Poor Travel History

Countries often trust applicants who have traveled before, especially to nations with strong visa systems.

Before you apply for “bigger visas” like US / UK / Australia / Schengen etc. Build your travel history by visiting visa-free or easy-visa countries. Some of them are Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Mauritius.

Tip: If you are a first-time international traveler – strengthen your visa application with strong finances, genuine itinerary, employment proof, well-written covering letter.

3. Unclear or Weak Ties to Home Country

Visa officers must be convinced you’ll return home.

Common mistakes

  • No proof of employment.
  • Vague leave approval.
  • Weak family or business ties.
  • Missing evidence of property or financial assets.

How to avoid it

  • Submit employment letter, leave approval, and salary slips.
  • Provide business registration papers if self-employed.
  • Show property papers or family responsibilities when appropriate.

4. Poorly Written Covering Letter

Your covering letter is often the first thing visa officers read – and many applicants either skip it or write one that creates confusion.

Clearly explain the purpose of your visit, the details of people you are travelling with (having a family helps), duration of stay and your ability to cover the funds required for the trip.

Ensure all the details match the documents you will submit.

Try to write a genuine letter yourself without taking help from AI agents like ChatGPT.

5. Weak or Unrealistic Travel Itinerary

This is also very important. Plan your trip in advance, do not submit an itinerary taken from the internet or generated using ChatGPT.

Ensure your itinerary is not overly-packed with too many places to visit in too few days (this is a big red flag).

The itinerary also has to match your ability to finance the trip. For example, if you plan a 10-night trip to Switzerland (Schengen visa) – but show an average balance of less than 1 lakh. The probability of your visa getting rejected for this reason alone is very high.

For a Europe trip, you need 200 Euros per day per couple – this is bare minimum, excluding flights. For a single person this can be a little lower 100-150 Euros (if your itinerary shows you are staying at hostels). For a family of 4 – the cost of your trip is likely to be 300 euros or more per day.

This approximately translates to showing the visa officer that you have the ability to spend ₹ 2-3 lakhs for a 10 day trip for a couple – not including the cost of your flight tickets.

If your SB account has lower average balances, support it with your mutual fund / stock investments, fixed deposits, credit card statements (with high credit limit – this shows you can spend).

6. Previous Visa Refusals

Past refusals are not automatic grounds for rejection – unless it is not explained properly in the covering letter.

When re-applying, improve the weak-points (you can take our “visa check” service to strengthen your application).

One final tip before we end this article – You honesty helps, your visa officer will sense it – they are trained to. Just being honest and genuine will help immensely even if your documents aren’t the strongest. This is where we can help, by talking to you and guiding you.
